EU biodiversity strategy

On 3 May 2011 the EU Commission submitted a proposal for the future biodiversity policy of the EU. The proposal is in response to a request made by the Environment Council to the Commission in March 2010, to swiftly submit a strategy for implementing the targets which the EU set itself at Community and international level for the conservation of biological diversity.

Federal Environment Minister Norbert Röttgen and many of his EU colleagues signed a Declaration on the Strategy.

The Commission proposal will be presented on 10 May at the Council Working Party on Environment. The Working Party will then begin on Council conclusions stating its position on the Commission proposal. Adoption of the conclusions by the Environment Council is planned for 21 June.
